The challenge
Across Romania and Moldova, thousands of young people leave the child protection system each year, often turning 18 with no family support, financial stability, or safety net. Many have grown up in institutions or fractured households, shaped by trauma, neglect, and instability. The transition to adulthood—already complex—is further burdened by poverty, stigma, and a profound lack of access to mental health care.
These emerging adults face some of the highest rates of social and economic exclusion in Europe. Youth unemployment remains high, and a significant number are not in education, employment, or training. Emotional resilience is rarely prioritized, even though mental health challenges—like anxiety, isolation, and chronic stress—are common outcomes of institutional upbringing. Without intervention, these young adults risk being pushed to the margins of society, carrying the weight of a system that was never designed to help them thrive.
Turning challenge into opportunity
The Social Incubator exists to shift that reality. Working across Romania and Moldova, they meet vulnerable youth at the moment of transition and accompany them on their journey toward independence. Their work is grounded in a holistic model that recognizes both the structural and emotional barriers young people face when growing up without consistent care.
Their programs are designed to support the full spectrum of a young person’s development—from healing past trauma to preparing for future success. Career readiness initiatives offer job training, digital skills development, and direct connections to employers. Mental health services include individual and group therapy, delivered through long-term, trust-based relationships with therapists who understand the complex histories of institutionalized youth. Community-building and mentorship programs foster belonging and connection—often for the first time in a young person’s life.
With support from The Inner Foundation, The Social Incubator is now expanding its mental health programming as a core pillar of its work. This includes securing therapist retention to ensure continuity of care, increasing access to therapy for youth in underserved areas, and launching corporate mental health trainings to make inclusion a shared responsibility across sectors. Their advocacy and awareness efforts also work to dismantle stigma—amplifying the voices of young people who’ve too often been ignored.

“For young people transitioning out of care, healing often begins with someone who truly believes in their potential.
At The Social Incubator, that is our mission: to walk beside them as they rediscover who they are and who they can become. The Inner Foundation is a true partner in this journey, standing with us to make mental health a right, not a privilege.
Their support allows us to expand access, deepen trust, and build a future where every young person, no matter their past, has the chance to thrive. We are deeply grateful and proud to be part of such a bold, values-driven community, and we look forward to building the next chapter together.”
