Mental health is not just the absence of illness—it is the foundation for resilience, relationships, and meaningful participation in society. Yet, mental disorders have surged globally, affecting nearly one billion people—a number equivalent to the combined populations of Europe and North America.

Among these, emerging adults (ages 18-30) are particularly vulnerable. This period of transition—marked by leaving home, entering the workforce, or pursuing higher education—presents both immense opportunities and increased stress. Depression rates among emerging adults are twice the average in the Nordics, exacerbated by economic uncertainty, social media pressures, and shifting societal expectations.

Despite the magnitude of the crisis, mental health solutions remain fragmented, underfunded, and inaccessible to many. This disconnect between growing needs and inadequate support systems highlights the urgent need for more targeted, scalable, and sustainable approaches.

Why we developed our thematic framework

At The Inner Foundation, we recognize that mental health does not exist in isolation—it is deeply shaped by economic, social, and technological forces. The complexity of these challenges demands a more structured approach, which is why we developed our thematic investment framework.

Our framework is designed to:

  • Identify key areas where investment can drive meaningful, systemic change
  • Address root causes rather than just symptoms of mental ill health
  • Ensure solutions are accessible, scalable, and built for long-term impact

Through this lens, we have defined seven thematic focus areas that reflect both the challenges and opportunities for emerging adults’ mental well-being:

  • From Loneliness to Social Connection – Strengthening social bonds and fostering a sense of belonging
  • Uplifting Emerging Adult Men – Addressing the mental health gap among young men
  • Female Health Equity – Bridging disparities in women’s health and its intertwined mental health burden
  • Healthy Digital Habits – Navigating an evolving digital landscape for mental well-being
  • Climate Resilience – Mitigating the mental health impact of climate-related stress
  • Mending Disrupted Family Systems – Supporting young people affected by displacement and family instability
  • Well-being in Education and Workplace Entry – Ensuring smooth transitions into adulthood

Rather than treating these issues as isolated challenges, our approach recognizes their interconnectivity—mental well-being is shaped by multiple, overlapping forces. Tackling them requires collaboration, innovation, and investment in solutions that can scale.

A catalytic approach to scaling impact

As a catalytic hybrid financing investor, The Inner Foundation backs intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs who develop solutions at the intersection of mental well-being and systemic change. Our strategy is rooted in:

  • Prioritizing emerging adults (18-30 years old)
  • Focusing on Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, and North America
  • Tackling loneliness as a cross-cutting issue
  • Ensuring accessibility, affordability, destigmatisation, and inclusion as levers for investment
  • Leveraging technology as an enabler
A dual approach to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging

At The Inner Foundation, DEIB is an integral part of our investment strategy, shaping who we invest in and how we deploy capital. Our commitment unfolds in two distinct ways:

  • Investing in DEIB-focused funds

Beyond our direct mental health investments, we allocate capital through LP positions in funds owned by underrepresented fund managers and fund of funds with DEIB as their core focus. By investing in those with expertise, competence, and lived experience, we amplify impact—ensuring that capital is stewarded by those best positioned to support underrepresented founders and diverse-led solutions.

  • Integrating a DEIB lens into mental health investments

In addition to backing DEIB-driven funds, we apply a DEIB lens across all our mental health investments. We actively support the development of a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive mental health support system—ensuring that mental health solutions increase access for those historically underserved and reflect the diverse realities of the communities they aim to serve.

By integrating DEIB at both the fund and solution level, we ensure that our investments not only scale but do so with intentionality and equity, building a financial ecosystem that fosters meaningful, systemic change.
